The Arizona Cardinals made it a priority to upgrade their backup quarterback situation. Last year, Chris Streveler was the primary backup and Brett Hundley was also on the roster.
They did not bring Hundley back and added Colt McCoy, who has spent 11 years in the NFL. Streveler is still on the roster and the Cardinals still really like him.
Kliff Kingsbury said Saturday Streveler is “a tremendous athlete” and that the team believes he has “a great future at quarterback.”
He believes McCoy is great for him and his development.
“I think Colt could be one of the best things ever for him, being around that type of professional, that type of experience, the way he goes about the game,” Kingsbury said.
McCoy is not only good for Streveler, competing for a spot on the roster and perhaps the backup role again. He also is good for Kyler Murray.
“We know we wanted to find the right guy that could play at a high level and also help mentor Kyler,” Kingsbury said. “To find a guy who I know Kyler watched when he was growing up when Colt was the king of Texas, it’s pretty neat.”
McCoy is an “ultimate professional, very smart and can really play at a high level,” Kingsbury added. “He’s a guy who’s won a lot of games in this league. He had one of the most storied college careers of anyone ever. We’re really, really blessed to have him.”
McCoy brings a competitive fire to the team.
“He’s very competitive,” Kingsbury said. ”When you watch practice, you can see that, and he goes to the right place with the football and he can still sling it.
“It’s fun just to watch that and to listen to him talk. He doesn’t see himself as a backup, which is a lot of fun as a competitor and a coach myself to watch him and watch how he goes about and prepares as if he were a starter.”
It is going to be fun to see how things play out in the preseason with both McCoy and Streveler.
Most assume McCoy will be the No. 2 quarterback. That was assumed about Hundley last year, but Streveler won the job.
Will the Cardinals keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster again? They might.
Streveler might also have other roles to be useful on Sundays.
He was getting some work on special teams as part of the kick return team during Saturday’s practice.
