Though we now look to both the College Football Playoff as well as the associated committee rankings to give us a barometer and eventual champion in the sport, it wasn’t always so simple and streamlined.

The playoff rankings didn’t start in earnest until 2014, with the BCS having come before that, and (potential) split national champions according to the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll having come before that.

Taking a look at one of those polls, who has been the most-ranked AP Top 25 team, and the most consistent power? Considering Michigan football’s storied history, where do the Wolverines fall?

Our sister site, College Football News, used the final rankings from the AP Top 25 going all the way back to 1935 to determine which programs have consistently been rated in the poll at the end. The maize and blue did manage to be a top 5 program in those metrics, along with some of the other most-storied programs in the sport.

Here’s what College Football News derived, including point totals (in parentheses).
