2020-2021 Combination Football and Basketball Rankings Top Ten
The ten schools that did the most in 2020-2021 in the two major sports.
10 Florida
2020: 9 2019: 13 2018: 66
Football: 8-4 overall, 8-2 in conference, 1st in SEC West
Basketball: 15-10 overall, 9-7 in conference, 5th in SEC
The football season ended with a thud, but at least the Gators got to the SEC Championship with a shot a possibly getting into the CFP with a win. The basketball side got a win in the tournament.
9 Texas
2020: 37 2019: 33 2018: 26
Football: 7-3 overall, 5-3 in conference, 4th in Big 12
Basketball: 19-8 overall, 11-6 in conference, T3rd in Big 12
Lost in the firing of Tom Herman was a seven-win season that ended with a blowout win over Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. Lost in the end of the Shaka Smart era was a Big 12 tournament championship.
8 Clemson
2020: 14 2019: 6 2018: 2
Football: 10-2 overall, 9-1 in conference, 2nd in ACC*
Basketball: 16-8 overall, 10-6 in conference, T5th in ACC
The basketball side got to the tournament, but winning the ACC Championship – again – in football and making another College Football Playoff was everything.
7 Baylor
2020: 3 2019: 28 2018: 105
Football: 2-7 overall, 2-7 in conference, 9th in Big 12
Basketball: 27-2 overall, 13-1 in conference, 1st in Big 12
Warning: this ranking could change after Monday night. You make a national championship game in one of the two major sports, you get into the top ten – even with an awful football season.
6 Oklahoma
2020: 7 2019: 2 2018: 7
Football: 9-2 overall, 6-2 in conference, 2nd in Big 12*
Basketball: 16-11 overall, 9-8 in conference, T6th in Big 12
It wasn’t quite the year the Sooners might have wanted, but the football team won another Big 12 title and throttled Florida in the bowl, and the hoops side had a decent season with a tournament appearance.
5 USC
2020: 18 2019: 110 2018: 31
Football: 5-1 overall, 5-0 in conference, 1st in Pac-12 South
Basketball: 25-8 overall, 15-5 in conference, 2nd in Pac-12
The Trojans might not have won anything big, but they got to both the Elite Eight in basketball and the Pac-12 Championship in football. However …
4 Oregon
2020: 1 2019: 14 2018: 49
Football: 4-3 overall, 3-2 in conference, 2nd in Pac-12 North*
Basketball: 21-7 overall, 14-4 in conference, 1st in Pac-12
USC might have tagged the Ducks in the NCAAs, but it was the reverse for the Pac-12 football title.
3 Liberty
2020: 16 2019: 82 2018: NR
Football: 10-1 overall
Basketball: 23-6 overall, 11-2 in conference, T1st in Atlantic Sun*
The Flames might have been bounced from the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but they at least got there after winning the Atlantic Sun title. The football side beat a few ACC teams and took out Coastal Carolina in the best game of the bowl season.
2 Ohio State
2020: 6 2019: 3 2018: 3
Football: 7-1 overall, 5-0 in conference, 1st in Big Ten East*
Basketball: 21-10 overall, 12-8 in conference, 5th in Big Ten
An argument could be made that Ohio State deserves to be a whole lot lower after the embarrassment of losing to a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament, but football overtakes that. Winning the Big Ten title and exorcising the Clemson demon after the rough loss the year before made up for the hoops gaffe.
1 Alabama
2020: 32 2019: 31 2018: 1
Football: 13-0 overall, 10-0 in conference, 1st in SEC West
Basketball: 26-7 overall, 16-2 in conference, 1st in SEC*
It wasn’t even remotely close for the No. 1 spot. The football side went on a historic run for the national title, the basketball team won the both the regular season and SEC Tournament championships, and the school even got a Heisman winner to go along with it all.
