Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar have already faced each other twice this year, at Backlash and Night of Champions, with each man winning once. It’s only logical they’d meet in a rubber match, and equally sensible for WWE to want to spice it up to help it stand out from the first two.
That means a match with a stipulation of some sort. Similar series are often settled with a Steel Cage match or even Hell in a Cell, but it appears WWE may have something even more creative in mind for the last part of this trilogy.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live on Monday, Bryan Alvarez said that the WWE creative team was going to reach back into the past to put a fresh spin on Rhodes-Lesnar III, which is expected to take place at SummerSlam in August (h/t WrestlingNews.co for the transcription).
I have been told that it is gonna be something. It’s not just gonna be a straight match. They’ve got some sort of stip that allegedly we have not seen in a while and that means not Hell in a Cell. So I wonder what stip they might be coming up with for the third match between these two. I hope it’s not ring of fire.
There have been rumors floating around that Rhodes pitched a Dog Collar match for his third go-round with Lesnar but that it was shot down. It stands to reason that he wouldn’t want to do Hell in a Cell since he’s already done one during his current WWE stint and it would be hard to top the memorable nature of that bout with Seth Rollins — where Rhodes famously competed with a torn pec.
If WWE needs some ideas on a gimmick match it can dust off after a while on the shelf, we have some ideas. Just maybe don’t do the Punjabi Prison match, as some gimmicks are meant to be left in the past.
