The Tigers already had one former wide receiver potentially hitting the open market this offseason in Odell Beckham Jr., and now they have another.
As the first day of legal tampering for NFL free agency began on Monday, the Cleveland Browns decided to release receiver Jarvis Landry. Considering the team just acquired Amari Cooper from Dallas via trade, it’s a move that makes a good deal of sense.
Landry had one year remaining on his deal and was set to make $16 million in 2022. He was granted permission to seek a trade after the team acquired Cooper, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the two sides tried to restructure his contract but couldn’t come to an agreement.

“The trade for Jarvis Landry in 2018 was a key moment for our organization,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said in a statement. “Jarvis’ on-field production and fiery competitiveness speaks for itself, but his leadership and team-oriented attitude impacted our culture in a way that will last in time even beyond his release. These decisions are always difficult, but we wish Jarvis well and we look forward to the day when he returns as a storied Browns alumnus.”
Landry played at LSU from 2011-13 and began his career as a second-round pick with the Miami Dolphins. He finished with two 1,000-yard seasons in Miami before he was traded to Cleveland, where his production has dropped off a bit but he’s still been solid when healthy.
He played in just 12 games in 2022 and registered a career-low 570 passing yards, but he is just 29-years-old and could still be one of the top free agents available this cycle.
