Clemson football surges in new ESPN SP+ rankings

Clemson shot up ESPN’s post-Week 5 SP+ rankings this week after taking care of business against Stanford.

ESPN released its updated SP+ rankings ($) after Week 5 of the college football season. The Clemson Tigers rose four spots to No. 13 in ESPN’s SP+, marking the second straight week that Dabo Swinney’s team had risen that many spots in those ratings.

Clemson’s offense was ranked No. 17 and its defense was ranked No. 28. The Tigers are the second highest-rated ACC team after the Louisville Cardinals fell 31-24 to Notre Dame in Sound Bend.

Only the unbeaten, 5-0 Miami Hurricanes rank ahead of Clemson among ACC teams. Miami is ranked two spots ahead of the Tigers at No. 11 overall. Coach Mario Cristobal’s team is rated as the sixth-best offense but much lower in defense (No. 33).

For the third straight week, the Ohio State Buckeyes topped ESPN’s rankings with a combined rating of 30.3. The Buckeyes have the No. 2 rated defense (9.5), as well as a top 10 rated offense (No. 9, 39.4).

Clemson is ranked No. 14 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll following its 40-14 win over Stanford. The Tigers take on rival Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium this Saturday in Week 6. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on ESPN.
