Clemson football joins elite 1980s Miami Hurricanes teams after road win at Florida State

Clemson

The Clemson Tigers won their fourth straight game Saturday night, defeating the Florida State Seminoles, 29-13, in Week 6.

The Tigers improved to 4-1 after quarterback Cade Klubnik and the offense built a 17-0 lead late in the first quarter on two long touchdown passes: an incredible 57-yard catch by receiver Antonio Williams and later, a 23-yard completion to freshman T.J. Moore with just 2 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Clemson’s defense held Florida State to less than 200 yards until the Seminoles’ final possession of the game late in the fourth quarter with the outcome already decided. The Tigers finished with 500 yards of total offense to Florida State’s 250 yards.

Saturday’s win put Clemson in some pretty unique territory.

From Florida State’s first year in the ACC in 1992 through 2014, Clemson had just one road win in Tallahassee. But after Saturday’s victory, the Tigers have now won four straight in Tallahassee. That’s no small feat, given how tough an environment Doak Campbell has been for opposing teams through the years.

As ESPN Stats & Information pointed out, Clemson is the first team since the 1980s Miami Hurricanes to win four straight in Tallahassee.

“The U” won four straight at Florida State from 1981-1987. As college football fans know, Miami owned the sport during the 80s, winning three national championships and playing for two more.

Clemson’s four-game winning streak at Doak Campbell dates back to 2016. That year, the Tigers got a 17-point fourth quarter that resulted in a 37-34 come-from-behind victory against the ‘Noles.

The two teams were scheduled to play in Tallahassee in 2020 but the game was postponed due to Florida State’s concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. An angry Dabo Swinney blasted Florida State’s administration, accusing them of having “forfeited” the game for reasons unrelated to COVID. Florida State was 2-6 at the time they were scheduled to face the No. 4-ranked Tigers.

Clemson will look to continue another streak of road wins when they visit Wake Forest this Saturday. The Tigers haven’t lost in Winston-Salem since October 2008, racking up seven straight wins at Wake Forest in that span.

Kickoff for Clemson vs. Wake Forest will be at noon ET. The game will be televised on ESPN.
