Clemson falls out of new AP Top 25 poll after loss to South Carolina

AP voters punish Clemson for back-to-back losses.

The Clemson Tigers managed to climb to No. 16 in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll after their 9-1 start.

Two weeks later, the Tigers (10-3 overall) are unranked after suffering back-to-back losses in overtime — to Memphis on Dec. 14 and to rival South Carolina last Tuesday. Clemson fell from No. 25 in Monday’s Week 8 AP poll, garnering 18 votes for top 25 consideration.

The Tigers defeated Wake Forest, 73-62, over the weekend at Littlejohn Coliseum to improve to 2-0 in ACC play. They’ll host the Stanford Cardinal when conference play resumes on New Year’s Day at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ACC Network.

The top three of the AP poll remained the same with Tennessee (11-0) at No. 1, Auburn (11-1) at No. 2 and Iowa State (10-1) at No. 3. Duke (10-2) moved up one spot to No. 4 with Alabama reentering the top five at No. 5.

As with the release of Monday’s new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, the Blue Devils were the only ranked team from the ACC.
