Clemson embarrassed at home by Louisville as College Football Playoff hopes fade

Clemson is dealt an embarrassing home loss to Louisville.

Louisville dashed Clemson football’s hopes for an ACC title and playoff bid with a 33-21 upset at Memorial Stadium, dominating on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals’ defense held the Tigers’ offense in check for most of the game, while their rushing attack exploited Clemson’s defensive struggles, sealing Louisville’s first-ever win over Clemson.

Clemson entered the night on a six-game winning streak, yet Louisville (6-3, 4-2 ACC) ended their momentum, snapping the Tigers’ 22-game night win streak at home. Quarterback Tyler Shough led Louisville’s offense with 156 passing yards and a rushing touchdown while running back Isaac Brown added 149 yards on the ground, including a 45-yard score.

Despite putting up 450 total yards, Clemson’s offense faced constant setbacks with dropped passes, penalties, and stalled drives. Cade Klubnik completed 33 of 56 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown but struggled to maintain rhythm. Phil Mafah provided a spark, rushing for 171 yards and two late touchdowns.

Injury issues mounted as defensive linemen Peter Woods, Tre Williams, DeMonte Capehart, and defensive back Shelton Lewis all faced injuries during the game. It was a brutal loss for the Tigers, as it feels like all the momentum the program has gained over recent weeks has dissipated in one night.

Clemson will look to regroup on the road against Virginia Tech next week.
