After getting rained out Thursday, the Cincinnati Reds (2-4) hit the road to face the Detroit Tigers (4-3) Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET at Comerica Park. We analyze the Reds-Tigers  MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Reds at Tigers: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Luis Castillo vs. RHP Spencer Turnbull

Castillo in 2020: 0-0, 1.50 ERA (1 ER, 6 IP) in one start

  • Castillo will face the Tigers for the second time in as many starts. His first appearance against them was dominant, as he allowed just one run, while punching out 11 batters and walking just one.
  • Castillo wasn’t as good on the road in 2019 as he was at home, though the sample was smaller (12 road starts vs 20 at home). In those starts away from Great American Ball Park, Castillo went 7-1 with a 3.88 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 65 innings, but he did post an ugly 5.4 BB/9.

Turnbull in 2020: 0-0, 1.80 ERA (1 ER, 5 IP) in one start

  • Turnbull gets his second start against the Reds this season. In the first one, his swing-and-miss stuff was on display, as he generated 16 swinging strikes in his 87 pitches, whiffing eight batters, but also walking four.
  • He was 0-11 with a 4.92 ERA in 16 home starts in 2019, while averaging a tick under five innings per start. A .362 BABIP deserves much of the blame, though, and he missed a lot more bats at home (9.7 K/9) than on the road (7.9 K/9).

Prediction

Reds 4, Tigers 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Reds (-182) have the pitching edge and the more explosive offense, so they deserve to be favored, even on the road. But Turnbull is a strong pitcher in his own right. He shut down the Reds in his first start, and has recorded 36 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings over his past five starts, dating back to September of 2019.

The Reds’ -182 is too steep of a price to pay. More than likely, this game will stay close, and the TIGERS’ +165 appear to be the better value.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Reds are -1.5 (-115), while the Tigers check in at +1.5 (-106). Neither of these options are very appealing, so the recommendation is to PASS, though taking the Tigers at -1.5 (+310) on an alternate line may be worth a shot.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Cincinnati offense is always capable of putting a lot of runs on the board, but Turnbull has the skills to hold the Reds in check – he’s already done it once. A slight lean to UNDER 8.5 (-110) is the play here, as this game could definitely be a pitchers’ duel.
