Christian McCaffrey preparing to play in Week 2 vs. Vikings

The 49ers star running back was ruled out of Monday night’s regular season opener against the Jets due to a ankle/Achilles injury.

Despite missing Monday’s regular-season opener against the New York Jets with the same ankle/Achilles injury that ruled him out for most of training camp and the preseason, Christian McCaffrey is preparing to play in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

On Wednesday, the All-Pro rusher spoke to members of the media in Santa Clara and was asked about his potential availability. McCaffrey revealed his mentality for Week 2 is that he’s going to play.

My mentality is I’m playing this week. That’s where I’m at. That’s how I am every week. I’m not lying. I think as soon as a player says, maybe I’ll play, maybe I won’t. That’s not a good mentality to go into a week with when you’re kind of on the fence. So for me, I’m ready to go.

Shortly before kickoff on Monday, McCaffrey was listed as inactive against the Jets due to injury. Without the Pro Bowler in the backfield, Jordan Mason stood in for McCaffrey. The undrafted running back broke out, torching the Jets for 147 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

McCaffrey is coming off an All-Pro campaign with a career-best 1459 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns.

The 49ers are scheduled to meet Sam Darnold and the Vikings in Minnesota on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
