With no real NFL games on TV for another four months, fans have to make do with rankings season for now. While the Seahawks have plenty of talent to go around at wide receiver, running back and safety, there are still a lot of holes on this roster, especially at the top. If the 2022 season were to start today either Drew Lock or Geno Smith would be attempting to fill the void created by the Russell Wilson trade at quarterback. That’s not great news for fans of quality QB play.
Chris Simms at Pro Football Talk is currently working through his list of the top 40 quarterbacks in the league. Seattle’s top-two options are both near the bottom of that ranking. Simms has Lock ranked dead last at No. 40. Meanwhile, Smith is only a few spots higher at No. 33.
Both have their strengths and would make excellent backup options for any team. However, one will be expected to lead this new-look offense into the post-Wilson era.
That’s fine if the plan is to tread water this year and try for a new franchise QB in 2023. If the Seahawks actually plan on competing in the toughest division in the NFC it doesn’t bode well for their chances, though.
