The New Orleans Saints will get Chris Olave the ball quicker. He was asked about receiving targets on “easier” throws opposed to last year’s deeper route tree, and Olave’s facial expression told an entire story. He didn’t even let the question end before finishing with “a lot of down the field.”
Olave elaborated on that point: “It’s a lot of easy routes. Especially the first two preseason games, Klint (Kubiak) been trying to get me the ball early.” Olave went on to describe the type of routes he’s running closer to the line of scrimmage and how that will make it easier to get involved in the game earlier in the game.
It is clear Olave likes this aspect in the new offense. It makes life easier on him, while also help the Saints get their best weapon better involved. Olave would’ve likely see more targets regardless, but this should maximize his usage. Deeper routes are more difficult passes and take longer to develop.
With an offensive line filled with question marks, longer developing routes doesn’t feel like the most logical way to go. Of course, those quicker routes could just go to someone else, but then your top receiver would become a victim of your own scheme.
