Chris Hogan signs with Jets, returns to AFC East and New Jersey

Chris Hogan is going to complete his tour of the AFC East.

The wide receiver is signing with the Jets, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Hogan, 32, has already made stops with division rivals Miami, Buffalo and New England — in addition to the 49ers, Giants and Panthers.

A Wyckoff, New Jersey native, Hogan is known for playing lacrosse at Penn State before spending a year with Monmouth’s football team. He eventually became a dependable pass-catcher with the Bills and then Patriots after bouncing around the NFL early in his career.

A two-time Super Bowl champion in New England, Hogan recorded 1,651 yards and 12 touchdowns in 40 games with Tom Brady as his primary quarterback from 2016-2018. He spent the 2019 season in Carolina, but a knee injury cost him a good chunk of the season. Hogan played in just seven games, caught eight passes and failed to score a touchdown for the first time since 2013.

Now Hogan, whose wife is a New York area surgeon, is joining the receiver-needy Jets as he looks to return to form. New York has little depth at the position, and that was before rookie Denzel Mims’ hamstring injury this week. Given his experience and the Jets’ limited options, Hogan should have a chance to catch on and see snaps alongside Mims, Breshad Perriman Jamison Crowder and Vyncint Smith.

If nothing else, having an accomplished, veteran receiver who has had to scratch and claw for an opportunity in the NFL should only help New York’s younger wideouts throughout the summer.
