Chiefs waive CB Javaris Davis, WR Cody White with non-football injury designations

The Kansas City Chiefs have begun to trim their roster to 80 players ahead of the August 16 deadline.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived a pair of players with non-football injury designations as they begin to trim their roster to 80 players.

As part of the new agreement between the NFL and NFLPA teams must reduce their roster size to 80 players by August 16. That means several players might not get a chance to get on the field and prove themselves to the coaching staff in Kansas City prior to being released.

On Sunday, Auburn CB Javaris Davis and Michigan State WR Cody White, who both signed with the Chiefs following the 2020 NFL Draft were waived with non-football injury designations. That means that both players suffered an injury prior to their time in Kansas City. It’s possible that both of these players had previously undisclosed injuries that popped up in their physicals with the team. Physical evaluations first occurred for rookies over the weekend.

Davis was a standout cornerback at Auburn, with consistent production over the course of his career. He was slightly undersized, which already made his chances to make the team slim. Still, it would have been fun to see him compete throughout training camp.

White was atypical compared to the common receiver that the Chiefs typically bring in. He was highlighted as one of the players that we believed would be cut ahead of training camp, given the news that teams would be forced to downsize their offseason rosters.

Ultimately, this is only the beginning of a wave of cuts in Kansas City. These were probably considered the easy cuts because of their non-football injury status, but some in the days ahead might be difficult decisions.
