The Kansas City Chiefs have quieted their doubters after stifling the No. 1 ranked Dallas Cowboys offense in Week 11.
Their resurgent defense is at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and they’re moving up in the latest USA TODAY power rankings because of it. The Week 10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders saw the Chiefs move back into the top 10 after falling as low as No. 14. Now, they’ve moved all the way back up to No. 4.
Here’s what USA TODAY’s Nate Davis had to say about Kansas City this week:
“A defense that’s given up 47 total points over the past four weeks (all wins) while taking the ball away eight times is what’s really ridden to the rescue of the AFC West leaders. Maybe QB Patrick Mahomes will be ready to take torch following a week off.”
Mahomes has hardly been perfect this season, yet he leads the NFL in passing with exactly 3,200 through 11 games played. His turnover luck has been astoundingly poor this season, but to suggest that Mahomes has been anything less than stellar would be wrong.
Could the Chiefs stand for some improvements and consistency on offense? Absolutely. The phrase “defense wins championships” comes to mind with the way the defense is playing for Kansas City right now. The key is to keep the momentum going and not peak too soon with six games remaining in the 2021 regular season.
