Chiefs re-sign practice squad WR Gehrig Dieter

The full 10-man practice squad from 2019 has been signed back to Kansas City for 2020.

The Sheepdog is back with the Kansas City Chiefs after a brief stint as a free agent.

On Monday, Dieter’s contract as a member of the Chiefs’ practice squad expired. He was the lone member of the 10-man practice squad in Kansas City that wasn’t re-signed ahead of the contract lapse. According to the NFL’s transaction report, Dieter has officially rejoined the team.

Dieter joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and formed a close friendship with QB Patrick Mahomes. They came up in the Kansas City system together, running the scout team, while Alex Smith played in his final season for the Chiefs. In 2018, Dieter was called up to see his first action on the 53-man roster. He appeared in four regular-season games and two playoff games.

Ahead of the 2019 season, Dieter was placed on injured reserve with a back injury. He was eventually released with an injury settlement and later rejoined the practice squad once he was healthy. He was called up to the 53-man roster for two games before he was released and signed to the practice squad once again. He’s seen most of his action on special teams over the past two seasons.

Dieter will get another shot to make the team in 2020 and with some sure departures from the wide receiver room, I wouldn’t be against his ability to secure a role. He’s proven to be a team player and you can never have enough of those guys on your team.
