Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s Week 2 in Baltimore ended about as poorly as it possibly could, fumbling away a chance to win the game.

The team rallied around their running back after the game, propping him up until he has a chance to redeem his mistake. That shot at redemption for Edwards-Helaire could be just around the corner in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

As bad as the Chiefs have been defending the run this season, the Chargers have been right up there with them. Through two weeks, Los Angeles has allowed the second-highest yards per carry average allowing 4.6 yards per rush on defense. They’ve also allowed the third-most rushing yards in the NFL with 324 rushing yards.

The Chiefs’ offense is predicated on a high-powered passing attack, but this week might be an opportunity to get everyone working on the same page in the running game. On 41 attempts through two games, Kansas City has managed just 135 rushing yards (3.3 yards per attempt) and two rushing touchdowns. Plainly speaking, for an area that was supposed to be a point of emphasis and improvement this offseason, those numbers aren’t going to cut it.

This matchup against the Chargers looks like the perfect opportunity to let the new-look offensive line show some of that signature nastiness in the ground game. It also could be a great way to help Edwards-Helaire build some of his confidence back up after his costly fumble in Week 2. Getting the offensive line and Edwards-Helaire going in the run game could be paramount for future matchups too. The Chiefs know that if they’re going to go on another Super Bowl run, Edwards-Helaire is going to play a big part in that.
