Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ candidacy for MVP isn’t as hopeful as it was just a few days ago.
Fans have been hopeful that Mahomes could earn his second league MVP nod in three seasons, but recent developments in the vote to determine the NFL’s All-Pro Team for 2020 suggest that won’t happen. Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers received 46-of-50 possible votes for First-Team All-Pro. The remaining votes were split between Mahomes and Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, earning them Second-Team All-Pro selections.
Why is this significant in terms of the MVP voting? Well, history suggests that Rodgers will win the award. He was named First-Team All-Pro in each of two seasons that he also won the league MVP award, back in 2011 and 2014.

Additionally, the same 50 media members who vote to select the All-Pro teams also vote on the NFL Honors awards. So if they voted Rodgers in as First-Team All-Pro with a near-unanimous vote, it’s likely that he’ll get the same type of support in an award traditionally handed out to the top quarterback in the league.
Mahomes will ultimately be measured by his ability to lead the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl this year. Anything else tacked on beyond that is just extra for the star quarterback. Fans should, however, prepare themselves for the likelihood that Rodgers is named league MVP for 2020. Of course, there’s always the chance that the two quarterbacks will have the opportunity to prove who is truly the better player during Super Bowl LV.
