Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is developing a bit of a reputation among his coaches and teammates. One thing that we’ve continuously heard about Edwards-Helaire throughout this unique offseason is that he has a great work ethic.
On Sunday, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes spoke to the media, sharing his first impressions of Edwards-Helaire now that training camp is underway. Mahomes, if you’ll recall, played a big part in Edwards-Helaire being the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Mahomes reiterated what we’ve been hearing about the work ethic of the rookie running back so far.
“My first impression is that he’s a hard worker,” Mahomes said. “I think that’s the first thing that you could see from Day 1. He’s always wanting to learn more, he’s wanting to get in every single rep that they let him in. He’s someone that has gotten better every single day. I’m excited to have him, adapt him, and involve him more and more in the offense. And as learns more, he’ll be able to progress and have more success.”
Just last week, Andy Reid compared Edwards-Helaire to Eric Bieniemy in part because of his work ethic. It’s clear that he’s eager to pick up the offense and become more involved in Kansas City.
Perhaps the most exciting thing that Mahomes shared is that he believes Edwards-Helaire is improving each and every day. That’s something that every Chiefs player strives for during the offseason, but it’s even more impressive to hear that about a rookie.
The next few weeks will be crucial as the Chiefs rookies and veterans begin practicing together in the gradual ramp-up period and eventually the contact integration period of training camp. Hopefully, Edwards-Helaire will continue improving, learning and be worked into the offense alongside Mahomes even more.
