Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joins exclusive club with Week 17 performance

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joined former #Saints QB Drew Brees as the only QBs in NFL history to have two seasons of 5,000 passing yards & 40 passing TDs.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joined a very exclusive club during the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos.

Mahomes recorded 328 passing yards in Sunday’s win against Denver, crossing the 5,000-yard mark (5,048) for the second time in his NFL career (5,097 in 2018). Both times it took him just 16 games to cross the 5,000-yard mark. In doing so, Mahomes became just the third quarterback in NFL history to record multiple seasons with at least 5,000 passing yards. Drew Brees has five such seasons and Tom Brady has two such seasons.

Mahomes also recorded three touchdown passes in the Week 17 win, bringing him to 40 touchdown passes on the season. In doing so, Mahomes has joined Brees as the only two quarterbacks in NFL history to record multiple seasons of 5,000+ passing yards and 40+ touchdown passes.

It’s not uncommon for Mahomes to see his name on a list with Hall of Fame quarterbacks, but head revealed to reporters after the game that it’s still a special moment for him.

“I mean, obviously it’s really cool if you look at the names that are on that list,” Mahomes said. “You’re talking about the all-time greats with Drew Brees and Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, so just to be a part of the list that has those names on there it’s a special accomplishment. And I’m glad I have the people around me and the coaches around me to be able to do it.”

Mahomes still has a chance to break more records in the final game of the 2022 NFL season in Week 18. He needs just 186 combined rushing and passing yards to pass Brees (5,562) for the most combined passing and rushing yards in a single season in NFL history.
