Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was a perfect 6-of-6 for 55 yards on the team’s opening drive against the Denver Broncos in Week 17. All the completions went to different receivers, but one of those completions was different from all of the others.
On second-and-7 at about the 50-yard line, Mahomes threw a pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage and deflected right back to him. At that point when Mahomes caught the ball, he was no longer allowed to throw another pass, so he had to take off running. He managed to pick up six yards on the ground to give the team a third-and-short.
Technically, Mahomes managed to complete a pass for himself for a six-yard gain. Here is how the play appeared in the NFL Game Statistics and Information System:
(10:58) (Shotgun) P.Mahomes pass short left to P.Mahomes pushed ob at DEN 44 for 6 yards (A.Singleton).
It’s just another bit of magic for Mahomes to claim. But it’s not exactly a great start for the Broncos and their defense under interim head coach Jerry Rosburg in Week 17.
