The Kansas City Chiefs hosted a pair of wide receivers for workouts on Thursday and they plan to sign at least one of them to the practice squad following their visit.
According to Kansas City Star beat reporter Herbie Teope, the Chiefs plan to sign former Titans draft pick Tajae Sharpe to the practice squad after he clears the NFL’s COVID-19 screening. Teope’s report was later confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Sharpe joined former Chiefs practice squad WR Chad Williams, visiting team facilities on Thursday according to the NFL’s official transaction report.
Sharpe, 25, was drafted by the Tennesse in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He appeared in 47 games for the Titans over three seasons, starting in a total of 29 games. During that span, he recorded 92 receptions on 168 targets for 1,167 yards and eight touchdowns. He appeared against the Chiefs in the AFC title game last season, starting the game, but dropping his lone target. He caught one pass for 20 yards against the Chiefs in Week 10 earlier that year.

This offseason, Sharpe signed on with the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year, $1 million deal in free agency, but he never saw any significant action for the team. He appeared in just three games and had four targets with no receptions. If you’re catching onto the theme here, Sharpe has had trouble with drops throughout his career. He’s only caught around 54% of the passes that have come his way during his career.
A fresh start on the Chiefs’ practice squad could be good for Sharpe. The team is expected to lose recently-released special teams ace Marcus Kemp, who is reportedly set to sign to the Miami Dolphins practice squad. For now, I’d expect Sharpe to maintain a similar type of role in Kansas City with special teams being his primary expertise.
Sharpe will fill one of two vacant spots on the practice squad. It’s unclear what the Chiefs plan to do with their other free spot at this time.
