Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Sammy Watkins provide injury updates ahead of Super Bowl LV

Injury updates on some important members of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to get some good news on the injury front ahead of Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

First up, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes provided an update on his turf toe injury. He suffered the injury in the divisional round against the Cleveland Browns and it hampered him a bit in the AFC title game, but he expects to be 100% by Super Bowl LV.

“Yeah, I mean it feels a lot better,” Mahomes said. “I mean having these two weeks to let it rest and heal up, especially being over three weeks away from the injury itself. If you look at those types of injuries, that kind of gives you the normal timeline. Definitely every single day that I keep it rested, it makes it even better. But it’s pretty close to 100% and I’m pretty sure that by game day it will be.”

That’s big news for the Chiefs as Mahomes’ ability to scramble and create plays outside the pocket could be important in this game. Perhaps he won’t even need to wear the special orthotic that he wore against the Bills.

As for the other injury news, Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins has dealt with soft tissue injuries for the majority of the year. He dealt with a hamstring earlier in the year and has been sidelined throughout the playoffs with a calf injury. While he’s still working with the training staff to get right for gameday, he’s optimistic that he’ll be out there.

“I’m feeling great,” Watkins said. “I’m still working out with the training staff and Rick, just going over everything so that I can have a chance and possibly go out there and feel 100% or 95 or 85, whatever I get at by Sunday. But I’m feeling pretty good, very optimistic. I’ve been having good practices, so hopefully, I can go out there and have fun and play.”

Watkins has the reputation of coming up big for Kansas City in the playoffs over the past two seasons with a number of memorable clutch plays. Getting him back in any capacity would be great news for the offense when it comes to matching up with a talented Bucs defense.
