After falling to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC championship game, the Kansas City Chiefs now know where they’ll pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft.

The Chiefs now hold pick No. 30 in the first round of the draft. Whether they actually make a pick in the first round remains to be seen as Brett Veach has a penchant for trading late first-round draft picks for proven veterans. That might not be the case this year, though.

Last season the Buffalo Bills drafted DE Gregory Rousseau at pick No. 30 and he turned out to be a very solid pass-rusher with four sacks as a rookie. In 2019, the New York Giants took CB Deandre Baker at that spot. In 2018, the Minnesota Vikings took CB Mike Hughes. We’re very familiar with both players and their abilities after 2021. In 2017, the Pittsburgh Steelers took NFL sack leader T.J. Watt at pick No. 30. It seems like if history holds true, there should be some defensive talent for Kansas City at that spot.

From 1961 to 2021, Kansas City has only ever once picked a player at No. 30. That happened in the 1961 AFL draft, when the then-Dallas Texans selected Claude Moorman II of Duke University with pick No. 30. To further date how long it has been, Moorman played the ‘end’ position. Pick No. 30 was also in the fourth round of the AFL draft.

Moorman didn’t actually end up playing any games for the Chiefs in the AFL and as far as I can tell he didn’t play in the NFL either. Hopefully, that’s not a sign of what’s to come for Kansas City.
