Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid has already mentioned that he’s not changing his preseason routine just because the NFL eliminated a preseason game.
That means that the Chiefs’ starting lineup, whoever that may entail, will get the full first quarter of repetitions on offense and defense. The second-team units, headed up by quarterback Chad Henne, will get the second quarter and so on.
“Yeah, I basically do it the same way that we did our first three before,” Reid explained to reporters on Thursday. “They’ve got two weeks where we’re practicing, so I’ve got to get them some more work in.”
Reid is intent on getting his starters and backups as many repetitions as he can while the team has these opportunities. It’ll be the way that they’re best prepared for the Week 1 opener against the Cleveland Browns.
Depth players and guys on the roster bubble are at a big disadvantage without the fourth preseason game. Reid put emphasis on this first game as being extremely important, but he also notes that practices could factor into the decision-making process also.
“This game will be important for them, getting some work,” Reid said. “Next game, it’ll decrease as it goes, but it’s important that they get in and show. Then, practice will be important. Remember, we make cuts after every game, Tuesday after every game.”
The Chiefs practice every Monday after preseason games are played on Saturday. Then on Tuesday, they’ll have waves of roster cuts. On August 17, the Chiefs will cut their 90-man roster down to 85 players. On August 24, they’ll cut the roster down to 80 players. Finally, on August 31st, they’ll trim the roster down to 53 players. Those Monday practice sessions could really factor in for some of the bubble players who are looking to make an impression and stick in Kansas City.
