The NFL draft traditionally is filled with incredible stories of overcoming adversity and obstacles. The story regarding Tennessee Volunteers offensive guard Trey Smith is one of high upside mixed with unfortunate circumstances. The former five-star recruit battled a blood clotting issue twice during his collegiate career. While Smith hasn’t had any issues for the past two years, he spoke about his current condition and appreciation for the Chiefs franchise taking a chance on him late in the draft.
”I’ve been in absolute perfect health,” said Smith. “Having a great time no issues recently at all. Obviously, things are uncontrollable, but once again, thankful to the Hunt family and the Chiefs organization for believing in me. I’m ready to roll.”
Since 2017, Smith started 41 games at Tennessee, playing both guard and tackle. He earned two First-Team All-SEC selections, a 2020 All-American selection and a 2017 Freshman All-American selection. He hopes to continue the trend of good accolades and good health as he joins a title-contending team in Kansas City with a bit of a chip on his shoulder due to the fall in the draft.
Will never forget

Smith actually was fortunate enough to see the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV in person as a part of a college cohort. He knows all too well the type of team and offense that he’ll be joining in Kansas City. He’s also excited to get to work protecting Patrick Mahomes.
”Joining this organization is ultimately a dream come true,” Smith said. “I watched the Super Bowl when ya’ll played the 49ers. I sat in those stands and watched. I was amazed by the offense, amazed by the organization, watching them, their run. Having an opportunity to join them is humbling. I’m extremely blessed to have that opportunity. I am excited to get to work, really, with Patrick Mahomes.”
The Chiefs have effectively fortified their offensive line during the 2021 offseason. The selection of Smith is a risk, but one worth taking as he’ll contribute to the depth that the team so desperately needs after their loss in Super Bowl LV.
