The Kansas City Chiefs have had one of the best offenses in football since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback. The effect his outstanding performances have had on the punting has been evident as veteran punter Dustin Colquitt described in an interview earlier today.
Colquitt was a guest on former punter turned football analyst Pat McAfee’s podcast and talked about his mindset heading into games along with teammate Mahomes.
“You end up being a sports psychologist for your kicker. You’re holding a lot, said Colquitt. “You’re trying to make guys fumble; you’re trying to turn the field over, bury it inside the 10-yard line.”
A member of the franchise since 2005, Colquitt holds multiple punting records. He currently had the third most punts downed inside of the 20 in NFL history. Colquitt’s punts per season were nearly cut in half over the past three seasons due to the Chiefs’ efficient offense under Mahomes.
“He was groomed in an MLB locker room,” said Colquitt in regards to Mahomes. “So he takes that attitude and spunk and brings it into a football locker-room so the game day it’s just another game it’s like practice we’re out there fighting for each other, so it’s always fun to see that. He watched the original showtime with his father (Pat Mahomes) and said this is what my dad is like on gamedays. That’s how I’m going to be.”
Mahomes’ father played multiple seasons as a pitcher in Major League Baseball, reaching the world series as a member of the New York Mets.
