Chiefs’ Clyde Edwards-Helaire trained with Patrick Mahomes ahead of training camp

The rookie running back has a head start on building chemistry with the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire both reported for training camp today. The two are in the building in Kansas City together for the first time, but they’ve already had a head start on creating some chemistry this offseason.

Mahomes hosted a handful of workouts and throwing sessions with teammates throughout the offseason. When Mahomes met with the media on Saturday, he revealed that Edwards-Helaire got some work in with him prior to training camp.

“Clyde (Edward-Helaire) has been through some of those workouts and he has been out there,” Mahomes said. “I got to meet him and talk to him a little bit and obviously stay in touch throughout the whole process in general. He’s a guy that you know is a hard worker, you can tell by his demeanor, you can tell by the way he’s out there and what he does off the field and on the field. I’m excited to have him involved in the offense now and get out there more and more with him and build some chemistry.”

So what exactly did Mahomes and Edwards-Helaire work on together? A lot of it was simply the two players getting comfortable with each other.

“Really, most importantly, the first thing that we wanted to get down was just simply to work on the little things like timing,” Edwards-Helaire said. “And that was the biggest thing, just getting comfortable with even pulls and passes. And everything else, as far as getting comfortable standing next to Pat (Mahomes).”

Timing is everything between running backs and quarterbacks, especially now with the prevalence of the run-pass option. Edwards-Helaire will come into training camp having a better sense of how Mahomes pulls the ball on RPO’s. He’ll know where he likes to put the football on throws coming out of the backfield. It might not seem like a lot, but it could certainly lead to blossoming chemistry between these two players as the Chiefs begin their training camp.
