The Kansas City Chiefs have claimed their first player on waivers for the 2020 season.
According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have been awarded former San Francisco 49ers TE Daniel Helm. Helm had originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Duke in 2019. The 49ers would add the 6-4, 225-pound tight end with a month to go until the 2019 season.
Helm didn’t make the 49ers 53-man roster but would spend most of the 2019 season on the practice squad in San Francisco. He was called up to the 53-man roster in December but was inactive during both the regular season and the postseason, including Super Bowl LIV.
At Duke, Helm had 69 catches for 767 yards and six touchdowns over the course of his final three seasons. He is serviceable as a pass-catching tight end, but he’s also someone who could be utilized as a blocker.
The Chiefs only have three healthy tight ends on the roster right now with Deon Yelder missing multiple practices with a groin injury. That’s led to a lot of repetitions for the likes of Travis Kelce, Nick Keizer and Ricky Seals-Jones. This should allow the Chiefs to dial back some repetitions for those players.
