The Kansas City Chiefs continue to add reinforcements to their offensive line ahead of the 2021 season.
One of the latest additions during this year’s NFL draft, with the selection of center Creed Humphrey. Humphrey was an imposing figure on the offensive line during his career at Oklahoma. He was, however, stressed like many of the other prospects in this year’s draft, as he recalled the moment the Chiefs called him as the 63rd overall pick.
“Yeah, it was definitely nerve-wracking,” said Humphrey. “As far as when I heard I was going to get drafted, we knew it would be somewhere in the second round. That’s what we were thinking, so I got the call, and it was a huge sigh of relief. And then I got the call from the best organization in the country, so I was just so excited and so relieved, and now I’m just ready to get to work.”
Humphrey will be competing for playing time at the center position this season and is no stranger to working with NFL quarterbacks. He has blocked for Kyler Murray (Cardinals) and Jalen Hurts (Eagles) in college and now has the opportunity to protect former league MVP Patrick Mahomes.
”Yeah, I’ve had the chance to play with some good quarterbacks at OU and it’s been a big help for me,” Humphrey said. “Just their leadership skills and everything like that, it helps me a lot throughout my career, and getting to play with a player like Patrick Mahomes it’s so exciting just because he’s so talented. He’s such a good player, he can change the dynamic of a whole game, so I can’t wait to get up there and start working with the team.”
The Chiefs aren’t taking any chances on the offensive line. Not only did they add young talent, but they have added players who already have some chemistry with one another. Humphrey’s friendship with recent trade acquisition Orlando Brown Jr. was a key reason for being selected in the second round. He also appears to be close with sixth-round draft pick Trey Smith, who are already seeking BBQ recommendations in their soon-to-be football home.
