Chicago White Sox at Pittsburgh Pirates odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Chicago White Sox at Pittsburgh Pirates sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Chicago White Sox (26-16) and Pittsburgh Pirates (14-26) close out a two-gamer at PNC Park with a 7:05 p.m. ET contest Wednesday night. Below, we analyze the White Sox-Pirates MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

White Sox at Pirates: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Dane Dunning vs. RHP JT Brubaker

Dunning is on for his fourth start of the season (and the fourth of his career). The ChiSox rookie owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through his first 14 innings in the majors.

  • Has logged an impressive 50% groundball rate and 20% soft-contact rate over his first three starts.

Brubaker, likewise, is a Pirates rookie this season. The 26-year-old right-hander has logged a 3.96 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through five starts and a pair of relief appearances.

  • Expect the Bucs to be careful with Brubaker, who is coming off back-to-back 85-pitch efforts. Due to arm injury, he was limited to just 29 innings in the minors in 2019.

Moneyline (ML)

Chicago’s (-162) south-siders are a legitimate .600 baseball club, and one could make the case the underlying analytics actually undersell the White Sox’s 5.3 runs per game and 4.1 RPG allowed.

Pittsburgh (+145), on the other hand, is a legitimate National League cellar dweller. The Pirates have reached a point that exists at the extreme top and bottom of the bet-ability continuum whereby almost no acceptable value can be found in any game.

Can we find a margin on the Chicago side? Probably not on this WHITE SOX (-162) price. Something in the -155 range would be acceptable, but that drop seems unlikely.

New to sports betting? A winning $100 bet on the White Sox (-162) returns a profit of $61.73.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

A better price weighted for the play exists here on the run-and-a-half run line. The powerful Pale Hose are 11-5 in games decided by five-or-more runs. Chicago lost Tuesday’s mini-series opener after having won four consecutive games. All four were by multi-run margins. On Aug. 25-26, Chicago outscored the Pirates 14-3 over a pair of games in the Windy City.

Back the WHITE SOX -1.5 (-106).

Over/Under (O/U)

The call here is clouded by the short past-performance histories of the starters. A lower-humidity forecast with an inward breeze makes for a lean on the UNDER 9 (-110).
