Chase Winovich shares funny memory of draft-day phonecall with Bill Belichick

“It honestly sounded like he was just ordering pizza.”

A draft day phone call is a life changing moment. But when Bill Belichick makes the call, that moment may not feel as grand as it should.

At least, that’s how Chase Winovich remembered his draft-day phone call. When the New England Patriots called him to say they’d take him at 77th overall, Belichick didn’t exactly deliver the news with exuberance. Though the call was a bit of an anticlimax, it didn’t hold Winovich from celebrating properly. Still, his recollection of speaking with Belichick was pretty funny.

“It really was just a feeling of restlessness and angst because you have no idea what city you’re about to go to,” Winovich said on his YouTube channel. “Was I a defensive end? Was I an outside linebacker? When I got that call and it said ‘Massachusetts,’ it felt like I got a call from the Rolling Stones themselves. This day changed my life, but to Coach Belichick — it honestly sounded like he was just ordering pizza.”

Classic, Bill Belichic.
