Chargers to interview Mike Vrabel for head coaching job

Mike Vrabel had a 54-45 record and two playoff wins in nearly 100 games.

Former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will interview for the Chargers’ head coaching job on Thursday, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Vrabel was recently fired following back-to-back losing seasons with Tennessee. Still, he had a 54-45 record in nearly 100 games and two playoff wins.

His Titans teams were known for their disciplined, opportunistic defense. However, Vrabel’s downfall in Tennessee can be attributed to the offenses of the past few years. The Titans ranked in the bottom five in total offense in 2022 and 2023.

Of course, Vrabel is also known for his extensive playing career in New England, as well as coaching stops at Ohio State and the Texans before taking over the Titans.

Vrabel is a defensive mind, but he is not a playcaller, unlike, say, Brandon Staley. He is more of a player’s coach who carries a lot of respect in the locker room, as anyone in Tennessee from the last number of years would co-sign.

The Chargers also interviewed former Stanford head coach David Shaw on Thursday. LA plans to speak to Dan Quinn and Ben Johnson on Friday and Saturday.

Jim Harbaugh has the inside track to the job, but Vrabel and Johnson are good interview choices in case the Michigan coach does get cold feet about turning pro.
