Chargers seem to be leaning toward keeping Brandon Staley

Good news for Broncos fans who don’t want Sean Payton to team up with Justin Herbert — Chargers seem inclined to stick with Brandon Staley.

Denver Broncos fans were delighted to watch the Los Angeles Chargers blow a 27-0 lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday evening.

But once the joy of watching a division rival get bounced from the playoffs subsided, a serious question emerged: What if the Chargers fire coach Brandon Staley and replace him with Sean Payton?

Fortunately, it sounds like that won’t happen.

Chargers players have backed Staley and reports are starting to emerge that L.A.’s front office will likely bring the coach back for a third season.

NFL Network’s Jim Trotter, a former Chargers beat reporter, tweeted on Sunday evening that he believes “Sean Payton has never been a serious consideration because the team has never given serious consideration to firing Staley.”

The Score’s Jordan Schultz echoed that notion on Monday morning, tweeting that Los Angeles is “strongly considering” keeping Staley, with the team’s ownership group expected to meet with the coach soon.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has also thrown cold water on the possibility of the Chargers pursuing Payton.

Payton is one of eight known candidates the Broncos are considering for their head coach opening. Some fans in Denver don’t want to trade a first-round pick to acquire Payton, but even those fans should be relieved to know that he seems unlikely to team up with Justin Herbert in Los Angeles.
