Chargers free agent on the fringe: LB Denzel Perryman

Should the Chargers re-sign the 28-year old linebacker?

There are a few pending free agents for the Chargers who have a case to be re-signed, but there’s also a reason why they might not be brought back.

Among the few players that fall under this category includes linebacker Denzel Perryman.

Reason(s) why he should be re-signed: Perryman enjoyed arguably his best season as a pro in 2020, even though he was relegated to a rotational role. Playing all but three games, Perryman notched 48 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and a pass deflection. The former Miami product was improved in coverage, allowing the fewest receptions and yards of his career. He presented a much-needed veteran presence in the middle of the defense while LB Kenneth Murray dealt with growing pains. As the Chargers transition into a new defense, the 28-year old could be valuable depth, especially in case of injuries, which has been a common theme at the position.

Reason(s) why the team should move on: The Chargers have steadily been adding to the linebacker corps the past few years and they have a stout group in place with Murray, Kyzir White, Drue Tranquill and Nick Vigil. There’s plenty of reason to believe that the team will continue to get younger at the position via the draft. In each season since getting drafted in 2015, Perryman has dealt with some sort of injury, forcing him to miss a total of 27 games since then. Coming off his best season yet, Perryman may feel like he’s worth more than what Los Angeles might have in mind.

Verdict: Perryman signs elsewhere on a two-year deal.
