The preseason college football polls are starting to come out, so we’re one step closer to the 2024 season beginning. The AP Preseason Poll is the most recent to come out and Notre Dame has clocked in at seventh. They also were No. 7 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.
It’s not a surprise given that the Irish are expected to be College Football Playoff contenders.Inevitably, the Irish being in the top-10 of a preseason poll will lead to the naysayers and Irish haters coming out of the woodwork and making the tired “overrated” argument.
However, CFB Kings took to social media and gave some recent AP poll history that indicates how recent preseason rankings actually haven’t been that far off:
For the “Notre Dame is always overrated ever year” crowd:
Notre Dame’s recent preseason and postseason AP poll rankings.
• 2023: Started #13, finished #14
• 2022: Started #5, finished #18
• 2021: Started #9, finished #8
• 2020: Started #10, finished #5
• 2019: Started #9,… pic.twitter.com/rjvJNrmERH— CFB Kings (@CFBKings) August 12, 2024
No, the Irish don’t have any recent national championships or major bowl wins, but that’s not the argument here. The point is the voters aren’t as blinded by the historical aura of Notre Dame as many might think they are. They see things pretty well, and that should excite Irish fans and believers like nothing else.
