Central Michigan Chippewas: Key To The 2022 Offense
Quickly replace the tackles and keep the ground game going
Central Michigan – as it turned out among the NFL scouting world – had one of the best tackle situations last year with Bernard Raimann and Luke Goedeke. There’s talent stepping in, but not at that level.
The Chippewas running game failed to get to 100 yards twice last year – and the team lost. It worked in the fun shootout loss to Northern Illinois, and it wasn’t bad against Missouri.
CMU was 6-0 when it ran for 200 yards last year, and it’s 14-1 over the last three years when it gets there.
Central Michigan Chippewas: Key To The 2022 Defense
Do more to take the ball away
The Chippewas were the best in the nation at generating tackles for loss and near the top at generating sacks. With all the pressure and all that production, where were the takeaways?
They came in bunches with eight of the 15 three games, and that was it for the double-digit takeaways. Again, even with all of the pressure, the D picked off just five passes and two in the final eight games.
Central Michigan Chippewas: Key Player To The 2022 Season
LB Kyle Moretti, Soph.
Troy Brown and George Douglas were terrific. they didn’t do a lot to get into the backfield, but they made a whole bunch of plays.
Moretti had a good freshman year with 48 tackles, a sack, and four tackles for loss. But now he has to step up his game a few notches and fill the void left by the lost disruptive forces.
Central Michigan Chippewas: Key Transfer
WR Carlos Carriere, Sr.
The Chippewas didn’t do all that much through the transfer portal, but there should be more coming. Getting the 6-5, 195-pound Carriere was big, though. The receiving corps needs new parts, and Carriere has the size and speed to be a difference maker after catching five touchdown passes for the Terps last year.
Central Michigan Key Game To The 2022 Season
at Toledo, Oct. 1
The showdown at Northern Illinois in early November is big, but that’s coming after a week off. That’s about it for the nasty conference road games with Akron, and Eastern Michigan the other two after the MAC opener.
The Chippewas have to go to Toledo to start the league run, and a win could be a launching pad with Ball State, at Akron, and Bowling Green to follow for a likely 4-0 start if they can get by the Rockets.
