Celtics injury update: Smart to join Walker, Brown, Williams as OUT vs. Cavs

Smart’s absence will stretch the backcourt minutes thin.

The Boston Celtics will be noticeably thinner in their frontcourt with news that veteran guard Marcus Smart will join several teammates on the injury list for tonight’s away tilt with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Flower Mound native is reportedly sitting due to a right calf contusion, joining backcourt teammates Jaylen Brown (torn wrist ligament) and Kemba Walker (scheduled rest) and big man Robert Williams III (left foot turf toe) as out for the game Wednesday night. The Celtics will need to lean heavily on their depth, but are facing a Cavs team sitting seven or even eight of their own players.

Still, for a team fighting to not slip further in the standings at the end of the stretch run, this is far from an ideal situation.

The silver lining if there is one is that players like Tremont Waters, Carsen Edwards, Payton Pritchard and Aaron Nesmith will get an even greater opportunity than they were likely to in a season bereft of opportunity for them to play.
