Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams may still technically be listed as a rookie but the former Tennessee Volunteers product said Monday he doesn’t necessarily feel like one anymore.
Typically in a given year, Williams would have been preparing for his second year and playing in Summer League. Of course, with the season restart taking place this month, Williams and the rest of the NBA have bigger things to worry about than exhibition games in Las Vegas.
Williams lived with teammate Kemba Walker in Charlotte during quarantine and worked on his game every day. Williams said the work he put in has him feeling more confident in his abilities now, something he hopes can help the Celtics when they return to play on July 31.
For me, I just feel confident in my abilities now, more confident than I was in the beginning of the year as well as just prepared to play against the best athletes like I was before. Before I was kind of nervous, I feel like, and during the year you kind of got more accustomed and realized you belong here. For me, I’m more confident and able to do a lot of better things on the court. Hopefully, I can just expand on my role and help this team get to what our goal is.
Williams averaged 3.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and one assist in 62 games prior to the season shutdown. He was typically used as a utility player at times that could help fill different needs and bring energy off of the bench, a role he appeared to fill well.
The Celtics may need the new and improved Williams even more once the season resumes and it appears as though the rookie will be ready when his name is called upon.
