Ahead of what might have been one of the season’s most scintillating matchups, Boston Celtics fans are letting their feelings toward Kyrie Irving and his “inactive” designation be known.
They aren’t happy.
Despite evidence to the contrary, the trope that the former Celtic has a habit of evading home games against former franchises he has played for in the past is a popular one among fans of the spurned franchise, who have taken notice to Brooklyn’s less than ideal start to 2019-20, as well as the Nets’ play without Irving.
Drawing on the narrative of Irving’s evasion of ex-home courts, a large photo of Irving emblazoned with the words “COWARD” was slapped on utility poles outside of Boston’s homecourt, TD Garden, ahead of the aborted reunion.

While the fanbase may indeed have some legitimate bones to pick with their former floor general, any true test of Irving’s impact on his current team will have to wait until he returns to health, as will any “homecoming” in Boston.
If you could call the circus as it will likely be one, that is.
