Celtics All-Star Kemba Walker calls on us to check in with mentees

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Kemba Walker reminds us ot check in with our mentees during the pandemic.

In the midst of a pandemic, it can sometimes seem like our world is shrinking — and in many ways it does do to the dynamics of physical distancing.

But that doesn’t mean we should let our social relationships fall by the wayside — and if anything, it’s an excellent moment to make sure they are still holding strong with a check-in.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Kemba Walker has long been known to mentor others, whether they need help with homework or a good role model, and has made mentorship a part of his regular life.

But he’s also concerned those kinds of relationships may be hurt by what we’re all going through — and that at moments like these, we need to be making sure those connections remain intact and strong.

In a recent video produced with the NBA calling on us to check in with our mentees — formally so or not — the UConn product had plenty to say on the topic. “Mentoring isn’t just sharing what you know about the game,” began the Bronx native.

“It’s also about sharing what’s going on in your life. I try to touch base with my mentees as much as possible, and I love hearing from them, especially during this challenging time. We all have mentors in our lives, and we need them — especially when going through adversity, like how it is now. If you’re lucky enough to have people to look up to you, that may have helped you, now’s a good time to reach out to them.”

“So, please do me a favor — reach out, and check on your mentees,” closed the four-time All-Star.
