It may not be the fun thing to do, but it was the sporting thing to do.
Boston Celtics big man legend Bill Russell congratulated LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on winning the 2020 NBA title Sunday evening, and James in particularly for winning the NBA Finals MVP award named for Russell.
“Sorry I couldn’t be in the bubble,” said the sport’s winningest player to arguably its greatest in the tweet, “but I wanted to say congratulations to LeBron James for winning the Bill Russell Award.”
At 86 years old, even the stringent protocols of the NBA’s Disney restart ‘bubble’ campus were likely too much of a risk for Russell, the 11-time champion delivering his message remotely in a pandemic.
It’s odd not being @ #NBAFinals but @MiamiHEAT put up a good fight Strange times in the @NBA Bubble. I may not be there but I want to say Congratulations to @KingJames for winning the #BillRussellFinalsMVPaward & Congratulations to the @lakers #ForKobeAndGigi #MambaOut @NBAonABC pic.twitter.com/p91H7Td3t0

With the two franchises tied at 17 titles each and both clubs poised to contend for some time, we may be at the precipice of a new era of intense competition between the two teams — historically among the NBA’s biggest and best moments.
