CBS Sports writer calls Penn State running back duo best in the country

CBS Sports writer says Penn State’s running back duo the best in the nation in 2023.

Will any team in the Big Ten have a better running back combination than Penn State this season? Will any team in the country have a better duo? Not according to an overreaction from one college football writer.

CBS Sports writer Tom Fornelli shared his overreactions for each Big Ten team going into the 2023 season. In his overreaction to Penn State, Fornelli suggested that no school in the country will have a better running back duo than Penn State with [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag].

Both running backs are coming off terrific freshmen seasons. Allen rushed for 867 yards and 10 touchdowns, a total which would have set the Penn Stae freshman rushing touchdown record if not for Singleton rushing for 12 touchdowns in the same season. Singleton also led the team in rushing with 1,061 rushing yards.

Both backs return to lead the running attack this season and will be the focal point right from the start following an offseason transfer of Keyvone Lee, who sat atop the depth chart at the beginning of the 2022 season.

Here is what CBS Sports had to say about Penn State;

It’s ironic that Drew Allar, The QB Prince Who Was Promised, finally gets to take the reins from 15-year starter Sean Clifford, but it’s the rushing attack that will likely lead the Nittany Lions in 2023. In other words: Even with the five-star QB, don’t expect Penn State to look like Ohio State as much as it’ll look like Michigan. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 1,928 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns last season. With a young QB, a strong offensive line and a nasty defense this year, they’re likely to lead the way on offense. And that’s probably a smart choice because both are pretty dang good.

The combo of Singleton and Allen gives Penn State as solid a running back tandem as you may find in college football this season. Fornelli may not be too far off the mark on this overreaction. If Penn State doesn’t have the best duo in the nation, it should be in the conversation.
