CBS Sports rates Gators the top team in the State of Florida

In-state rivalries dominate the college football landscape, but which team is top dog in each of those rivalries? The Gators lead the pack.

In-state rivalries dominate the college football landscape, but which team is top dog in each of those rivalries?

CBS Sports attempts to answer that question, listing the best Division I teams in each state.

In the state of Florida, UF gets the nod over Florida State, Miami and UCF. Though the Seminoles have won a national title more recently than the Gators, Florida seems to have a much brighter future, at least in the short term.

In two years under coach Dan Mullen, UF has won back-to-back New Year’s Six games. Meanwhile, the Seminoles achieved its first two losing seasons since 1976 in that span and fired coach Willie Taggart, who was hired in the same coaching cycle as Mullen.

It remains to be seen if new coach Mike Norvell can get the program back on track, but considering Manny Diaz is heading into a key Year 2 in Miami and UCF seems to have fallen off from its days of going undefeated and still missing the College Football Playoff, Florida is pretty clearly the preeminent program in the state currently.

Here’s what CBS writer Barrett Sallee said about UF.

Dan Mullen’s crew has been to back-to-back New Year’s Six bowl games and should be in contention for the College Football Playoff in 2020. Meanwhile, Florida State and Miami (FL) have fallen on hard times, and UCF has taken a step back from its faux national title in 2017. — Barrett Sallee
