CBS Sports: One Michigan football player goes in first round in a seven-round mock

Excited to see where they all really go! #GoBlue

We are under a week away from the 2023 NFL Draft. There should be plenty of Wolverines getting the call next weekend, but there are only a couple of players that are being projected as possible first-round selections.

CBS Sports came out with a full seven-round mock draft and several Michigan players were listed. But there was one huge omission.

Josh Edwards believes one Michigan football player will make their way into the first round. Edwards has the New Orleans Saints selecting Mazi Smith with the 29th overall pick in the draft.

New Orleans signed a few interior defenders in free agency to replace Shy Tuttle and David Onyemata. Mazi Smith is a wide body who will upgrade the run defense.

For the rest of the draft, Edwards didn’t mention why he was mocking players to the teams, but he had one Wolverine going in round two. DJ Turner went 56th to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After losing Dalton Schultz in free agency, the Dallas Cowboys may be in need of a tight end to fill the void. Which is why Edwards had Luke Schoonmaker going to the ‘Boys with the 90th pick of the draft.

Dropping into the fifth round, Mike Morris gets selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 162nd pick. Edwards has the Colts taking the athletic edge defender to pair with Kwity Paye.

Morris wasn’t the only Wolverine to see his name called in round five. Kick Jake Moody went 173rd to the San Fransico 49ers.

In round six, Ryan Hayes heard his name called by the Detroit Lions. In this scenario, Hayes stays in state and would look to make a name for himself in another blue uniform.

In round seven, Edwards has Ronnie Bell going. But he has him going as the last pick in the entire draft to the Houston Texans with pick No. 259.

Somehow Olu Oluwatimi’s name was left off of Edwards’ mock draft. It’s hard to imagine Oluwatimi doesn’t get selected, in fact, he could hear his name called as early as the third round.

Roundup:

First round: Mazi Smith – New Orleans Saints (pick No. 29)

Second round: DJ Turner – Jacksonville Jaguars (pick No. 56)

Third round: Luke Schoonmaker – Dallas Cowboys (pick No. 90)

Fifth round: Mike Morris – Indianapolis Colts (pick No. 162)

Fifth round: Jake Moody – San Fransico 49ers (pick No. 173)

Sixth round: Ryan Hayes – Detroit Lions (pick No. 194)

Seventh round: Ronnie Bell – Houston Texans (pick No. 259)
