Jerry Palm of CBS Sports took a stab at trying to predict the initial College Football Playoff rankings. The initial rankings will be released on Tuesday. Palm broke down the rankings using the following criteria:
- Eye test
- Head-to-head record (if applicable)
- Conference championship (if applicable)
No. 24- Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns are the hunt for a shot at the Big 12 title and have a win over Oklahoma State. Texas still has two games left with other contenders, including a home matchup with Iowa State. First, though, the Longhorns need to take care of Kansas.
These predictions were made before the Kansas game was postponed, but the statement remains the same. All you need to do is exchange the Jayhawks for the Iowa State Cyclones. The entire season rides on this game on Friday. Hopefully, the team doesn’t eat too much turkey and come out slow against the Cyclones. They will need their ‘A’ game to beat Matt Campbell’s squad.
Big 12 teams in the rankings
- No. 14- Oklahoma State
- No. 19- Iowa State
- No. 22- Oklahoma
Given that the Cyclones are listed at No. 19 for Palm, that makes the game for Texas that much bigger. Not that the Longhorns have any shot at making the playoff but the higher the ranking, the better. It could mean that the difference between a New Years Six bowl game or a lower-level bowl game.
