Cavaliers ‘potential wildcard’ to be involved in a Ben Simmons trade

The Cleveland Cavaliers could be a potential wildcard in any Ben Simmons trade for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Now that Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons has made it known he wants to be traded out of the City of Brotherly Love, the question becomes where Simmons ends up?

The most persistant teams involved for Simmons have been the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Toronto Raptors. There were talks of the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings getting involved, but the Warriors are unlikely to get involved while the Kings don’t want to include De’Aaron Fox or Tyrese Haliburton.

In a roundtable discussion at The Athletic, Derek Bodner brought up one team Sixers president Daryl Morey could get involved: the Cleveland Cavaliers:

I think Cleveland is potentially a wildcard. But I think what’s perhaps more interesting than what new teams could enter into the bidding war for Simmons is what teams Morey will be able to rope in to make it a three- (or four-) team deal. That could end up being the key to all teams walking away feeling comfortable with the trade.

It definitely could not be a 1-on-1 trade for the Cavaliers and the Sixers. There are some solid young pieces on Cleveland’s roster, but not enough to pry away a young star like Simmons. That is where the other teams would come in for Morey, who is not afraid to pull off deals with multiple teams, to get the haul he would like for the three-time All-Star.
