Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley calls summer league debut a ‘learning game’

Mobley registered 12 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and one steal in the loss to the Rockets.

Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Evan Mobley on Sunday called his first game in the Las Vegas Summer League a learning experience as the third overall pick begins the transition to the NBA.

Mobley registered 12 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and one steal in nearly 28 minutes of work in the 84-76 loss to the Houston Rockets. He shot 6-of-17 from the field while he missed both of his attempts from 3-point range.

“It was the first game. I feel like I got to where I wanted to and the shots just didn’t fall,” Mobley said. “I’m just going to keep doing the same thing. I feel like I got what I wanted but it just didn’t fall.”

Mobley did the majority of his work in the post, on both offense and defense. He flashed his ability as a ballhandler on a couple of occasions while he also threw down a couple of strong dunks. He also showed his versatility as a defender, from his weakside help to on-ball ability.

Mobley mentioned afterward that the pace of the game was a big adjustment as it was much faster than in college. He felt as though he started getting it down by the end of the game and doesn’t believe it will be an issue moving forward.

He has had the opportunity to learn from the likes of Isaac Okoro and said the advice given to him by the older players has helped him out. Overall, Mobley said the more reps in practice and game situations should help him evolve.
