John Cena Instagram post teases Stone Cold Steve Austin WrestleMania appearance

WWE fans would be pretty thrilled to hear the breaking glass that means Stone Cold Steve Austin is on his way down the WrestleMania 40 ramp.

That John Cena is such a tease.

While the world has been wondering if Cena will have some kind of role at WrestleMania 40, he took to Instagram to fuel speculation about another WWE legend who has also been the subject of much fantasy booking for Philadelphia: Stone Cold Steve Austin.

It’s been two years since Austin thrilled WWE fans by returning to the ring to take on Kevin Owens in a highly regarded No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 38. While no one expects Stone Cold to take part in a full-on match in Philly — and this year’s card is loaded anyway —there have been rumblings that WWE was trying to figure out something for him to do.

Maybe it has.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C5YTSJwutv5/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

That’s a fun hair choice for Austin in any case.

A popular fan theory is that Austin, Cena and perhaps others would show up on night 2 to help neutralize The Rock and The Bloodline from interfering in the Cody Rhodes-Roman Reigns main event, even if it is contested under Bloodline Rules. That would only happen if Rhodes and Seth Rollins lose their tag team match against Reigns and The Rock to end night 1, so there are a lot of moving pieces to this theory.

Still, the so-called Avengers plan would be a lot of fun, seeing popular WWE stars assemble to ensure Rhodes gets a relatively fair fight in his rematch against Reigns. Whether that actually takes shape or Austin is used in some other manner, expect the crowd at Lincoln Financial Field to explode this weekend if it hears the sound of breaking glass at any time on Saturday or Sunday.

WWE WrestleMania SmackDown preview 04/05/24: Andre the Giant Battle Royal and more

We’ll also see Jey Uso battle his other brother, Solo Sikoa, on WrestleMania SmackDown from Philadelphia.

There was a time, not long ago, actually, when the Andre the Giant Battle Royal was part of WrestleMania itself. That’s no longer the case, but it does give the WrestleMania SmackDown episode we’re about to see tonight from Philadelphia something interesting as its centerpiece.

Who will win the Andre trophy?

Heck, who is even in the Andre the Giant Battle Royal? We don’t know just yet, but there’s a chance to make some history as it’s the 10th edition of this particular battle royal. And you know WWE loves it some anniversaries.

The Six-Pack Ladder Match and multi-person brawl between The Pride and The Final Testament have removed some of the potential candidates to win this from contention, unless there are people in it who also have a WrestleMania match. Otherwise, people like the members of Alpha Academy figure to have a shot, as do JD McDonagh and Ricochet.

Jey Uso has to fight another brother

As emotional as his battle against his twin brother Jimmy will be at WrestleMania, it’s not going to be easy sledding for Jey Uso on SmackDown either. That’s because Jey has to take on his not-so-little brother Solo Sikoa, and that’s no yeet.

(Sorry.)

Will the Enforcer of The Bloodline soften Jey up and make him vulnerable for Saturday night, or can Jey take some important momentum into the Showcase of the Immortals?

Will Logan Paul crash the KO Show?

Logan Paul has a serious issue when it comes to defending his United States Championship. While Kevin Owens and Randy Orton may not be best buds, they dislike the Maverick a lot more than they do each other.

That’s definitely a problem, but it’s one that Paul can turn to his potential advantage tonight. See, Orton will be the guest on The KO Show in Philadelphia, and if there’s one thing that tends to happen under those circumstances, it’s distrust being sown. Maybe Paul can do that here so that it doesn’t feel like a handicap match on Sunday.

WrestleMania SmackDown card for Philadelphia:

  • Andre the Giant Battle Royal
  • Randy Orton is the guest on The KO Show
  • Zelina Vega vs. Elektra Lopez
  • New Catch Republic vs. Austin Theory and Grayson Waller
  • Jey Uso vs. Solo Sikoa

We’re so, so close to WrestleMania 40 but still have this one final SmackDown to get through, and it should be a fun one. Join us back here at Wrestling Junkie for live results and updates starting at 8 p.m. ET.

WrestleMania 40 stage reveal: Here’s what the set will look like this weekend

WWE 2K24 and The Ninja Kidz helped present the WrestleMania 40 stage on Thursday night.

The wait for WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia will go on for a few more days, but the wait to see what the stage will look like at Lincoln Financial Field is over.

Presented by WWE 2K24, the stage reveal took place late Thursday night and was hosted by Kayla Braxton and Jackie Redmond. They got some help from The Ninja Kidz, who showed off some of their ridiculous athleticism before a full dose of pyro introduced the stage.

As with other recent WrestleMania stages, this one prominently features the “WrestleMania” name above the entrance, which is flanked by the very large Roman numerals for this year’s show — XL, appropriately enough.

There’s also a large screen with the Liberty Bell, which has been present in all of the design elements for this year’s event. Oversized video boards on the sides of the stage will no doubt be used in some creative ways during entrances and during the time in-between matches.

The stage will get plenty of time to shine this weekend, as WrestleMania 40 unfolds over both Saturday and Sunday night at the home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.

Kofi Kingston sees victory slip away in star-studded WWE 2K24 Showdown

R-Truth ended up one of the biggest stars of the WWE 2K24 tournament held at WWE World in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia, Pa.Kofi Kingston was celebrating like he won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 on Thursday evening, when he and Barstool Sports personality Robbie Fox apparently had won the WWE 2K24 Showdown Championship. However, the special guest referee for the event, media personality Greg Miller, had other things in mind.

Miller declared Kingston had to face off against Fox because there was only one belt. Fox, who played as the 2001 version of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, beat Kingston, who played Roman Reigns, to win the championship — with a little help from Miller fast-counting as Mick Foley.

The stars of the tournament were R-Truth and Miller. Truth told Wrestling Junkie before the festivities began that he trained his WrestleMania XL tag team partner vigorously and would be in his corner. Well, he wasn’t kidding.

While The Miz and Brandon Walker were playing Bayley and Philadelphia Eagles star Lane Johnson, the former United States and 24/7 champion held a microphone directly behind Miz, giving him instructions on which buttons to press. Miller was having none of the nonsense and gave Truth an imaginary line to not cross. During numerous points of the Showdown Championship, Truth would talk trash to other participants, which drew loud ovations from the crowd inside WWE World.

Each team in the WWE 2K24 tournament featured a WWE superstar teaming with a celebrity. Jey Uso teamed with rapper Wale. But they lost in record time to Johnny Gargano and comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias in a Hell In A Cell match, in which the latter played as two-time Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes and Intercontinental Champion Gunther.

Miz and Barstool personality Walker came up short in what ended up being the semifinals. The final team was Zelina Vega and 100 Thieves creator Jordan “LEGIQN” Payton, who lost to Kingston and Fox in the opening round.

How to watch NXT Stand and Deliver: Live stream US, international

A look at how to watch NXT Stand and Deliver this Saturday, April 6.

Two nights of WrestleMania 40 may dominate the spotlight, but there’s another marquee WWE premium live event taking place over the weekend. NXT is set to present Stand & Deliver on Saturday, April 6, at the Wells Fargo Arena. Located just outside of Lincoln Financial Field, where the Grandest Stage of Them All will unfold, this event promises to deliver its own action and excitement.

Stand and Deliver features no shortage of rising stars, headlined by Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams. These two were once allies, climbing the ranks together. However, months of tensions finally reached a boiling point when Hayes revealed himself as Williams’ backstage attacker, setting up their clash.

This will serve as their grudge match, potentially before one or both of these superstars move to the main roster. Hayes had a taste of the main roster on SmackDown, and Stand & Deliver might be his last stepping stone before going full-time.

Ilja Dragunov is set to defend the NXT Championship against Tony D’Angelo, presenting a golden opportunity for the latter to seize glory at this premium live event. It’s a chance for D’Angelo to prove himself on a grand stage and potentially etch his name in NXT history by upsetting the black and gold brand’s dominant titleholder.

Lyra Valkyria also puts her NXT Women’s Championship on the line against Roxanne Perez, whose change in attitude has her on the cusp of another title run.

These matches will grace Stand & Deliver, which has a special start time. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the action this weekend.

How to watch NXT Stand and Deliver

  • Date: Saturday, April 6, 2024
  • Location: Wells Fargo Arena, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Start time: 12:00 p.m. ET/9:00 a.m. PT
  • How to watch: On Peacock in the U.S., and on WWE Network in the rest of the world

WrestleMania XL tickets: How much it’ll cost if you still want to go

Here’s how much it will cost if you still want to try and nab WrestleMania XL tickets.

When it comes to WrestleMania XL tickets, there’s good news and bad news — and even the bad news is very good for WWE.

Both Saturday and Sunday of the upcoming event at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field are currently sold out. There’s always a chance there may be more tickets released once the full stage and set are constructed at the Linc, as that often is the case. But for right now, there are no seats available from the venue for either night.

Does that mean you’re out of luck if you still want to attend WrestleMania in person? Not at all. It just means you’ll have to pay for verified resale tickets through Ticketmaster.

Interestingly, while night 2 tickets have been a little more expensive throughout the buildup to the Show of Shows, at the time of this post, it’s a few bucks cheaper to go on Sunday night. Make no mistake, though, it’s expensive either way: $184 is the cheapest ticket on night 2, while $189 is the least expensive ticket right now for night 1.

It’s worth noting that the cheapest seats available even by resale are mostly in limited view areas that are behind the entrance stage or in the corners just clear of it. Take note as on Ticketmaster, seats like that are clearly marked “LIMITED VIEW.”

The high get-in price is indicative of how hot WWE is at the moment, as it’s been selling out shows and setting new gate records at a furious pace. It’s quite possible, maybe even likely, that WrestleMania XL will be the biggest gate in the event’s history come this weekend.

As an alternative, you may want to consider attending the Raw After WrestleMania, which is also in Philly at the Wells Fargo Center. At the moment, there are seats still left for that show on April 8 for $65.

Or you may just decide to stay home and watch WrestleMania XL with the millions of fans who will be taking in the spectacle on Peacock. Just know that if you want to go in person, there’s still time.

Bayley tries to get The Rock to Rock Bottom Michael Cole at WWE World at WrestleMania

Bayley couldn’t resist the chance to see if she could get The Rock to take her side in her feud with Michael Cole.

There are long-running WWE feuds, and then there’s Bayley and Michael Cole. Whether a heel or face, the Role Model has been tormenting the voice of WWE for years.

As she explained to our teammate Phil Strum on his Under the Ring podcast, making fun of Cole was something Bayley originally started just to break up awkward silences during WWE’s pandemic era. And it stuck from there, with Bayley rarely passing up any chance she gets to give Cole the business.

That includes while both of them were at WWE World at WrestleMania Thursday in Philadelphia. On the first day of the fan event, Bayley was on hand to take part in the WWE 2K Showdown video game tournament, while Cole was on the job.

Among other things, Cole moderated some Q&A with The Rock. As she posted to social media, Bayley couldn’t resist the chance to call for The Rock to hit Cole with a Rock Bottom.

The Rock did not, in fact, Rock Bottom Cole (though he has in the past). He did, however, find the time to turn running a little bit late for his appearance into an opportunity to troll the hometown Philadelphia Eagles, as well as invite a young fan onto the stage as a birthday surprise and treat him to a song you might have heard him sing in “Moana.”

WWE World at WrestleMania runs through Monday, April 8 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

WrestleMania 40 preview: What if Roman Reigns wins again?

Think WWE couldn’t let Roman Reigns beat Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania for a second straight year? Think again.

When the main event of WrestleMania 39 arrived a year ago at SoFi Stadium, I was sure Cody Rhodes was walking out with the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship that had for so long remained tightly in the grasp of Roman Reigns. WWE had signaled as much all along the way, hinting that it would be a night where Rhodes culminated a journey he was making not just for himself, but for his legendary late father as well.

We all know what happened.

The same matchup is slated for this Sunday at WrestleMania 40. WWE has done an incredible job not only making people want to see Cody and Roman run it back, but adding additional layers into the narrative so it’s not just a rematch.

Common sense suggests there’s no way that Rhodes loses again. History does too, as the last time two editions of WrestleMania had the exact same main event — WrestleMania 28 and 29, pitting John Cena against The Rock — the loser of the first match won the second meeting.

The difference between 2012-13, or really between now and almost any other time in WWE history, is the incredible hot streak the company is on. For more than a year, there’s been a steady cadence of sold out shows. Gate records seem to be falling monthly — and as recently as this week, when Raw at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn was the highest-grossing Monday night show WWE has ever held.

That kind of success gives WWE the kind of creative freedom it doesn’t usually enjoy. While Vince McMahon might have zigged where people expected him to zag just out of spike, Triple H and his team have so much earned trust that they can do the unexpected and not have to worry about fans abandoning the product in droves.

Thing like Reigns emerging from yet another WrestleMania with his title reign intact.

To be clear, I still expect Rhodes to be the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at the end of the night, soaking in the adulation from the fans at Lincoln Financial Field. I just won’t be quite as shocked this year if he isn’t.

Let’s examine why.

Cody Rhodes vs. The Rock is now the biggest money match WWE could make

WWE isn’t like its corporate partner, UFC, at least for the time being. It doesn’t need to put together the best possible pairings to ensure shows are packed. WrestleMania 40 sold most of its tickets long before any of the matches were finalized, because the brand itself is on fire. There’s a reason even the biggest of the company’s stars have been saying recently that things would roll on even without them, and that’s because it’s true.

But the popularity of WWE extends to metrics beyond ticket sales, which means it still behooves the creative team to find ways to try to hook people who aren’t following its programming regularly. It has that now thanks to The Rock.

The man who’s now dubbed himself the Final Boss is one of the most recognizable entertainers on the planet, someone who appeals to more than the weekly audience. It’s been apparent since he’s embraced his heel turn with The Bloodline during his current stint: The Rock still has a unique star power that no other current WWE talent can match.

And a funny thing happened along the way. Whereas once The Rock vs. Roman Reigns was the biggest match WWE could put on, it’s now pivoted ever so slightly to The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes.

That’s not an indictment of Reigns in any way, but simply an observation based on the build to WrestleMania 40. Fans want to see Cody get some payback on The Rock in a one-on-one situation. The tag team match on night 1 will undoubtedly scratch that itch to a certain degree, but it may also just stoke the desire for a singles showdown even more.

There are many ways to get to that, of course, but the most direct one is to have The Rock play an instrumental role in preventing Rhodes from winning on Sunday night. The catch would be if The Rock is unavailable, as he’s expected to return to shooting movies right after WrestleMania 40. There’s also no reason he couldn’t just roll back into WWE ahead of, say, SummerSlam and challenge Cody if the American Nightmare does win in Philadelphia.

So a hypothetical Rock-Cody match isn’t contingent on Rhodes facing defeat for the second straight year, and it may not even be possible given extenuating circumstances. The fact remains that it’s now a tantalizing dream match that no one was even considering a few months ago, and a Cody loss would hint heavily that it was coming down the road.

Not everyone will be mad if Roman Reigns wins in Philly

For longtime WWE fans, it’s hard to forget the 2015 Royal Rumble and the way the crowd in Philadelphia treated Reigns. Even with The Rock on hand to try and give his cousin the rub, the fans that day were so upset that Daniel Bryan didn’t win the Rumble match that they booed the crap out of Roman.

I was there in person, and there was something in the air even before fans piled into the Wells Fargo Center. It was hard to describe, but it was palpable.

Things have changed a lot for Reigns since then. He hadn’t even dreamed up the Tribal Chief persona, and The Bloodline was still years away. Reigns now is what WWE was hoping he’d be nine years ago, but he hadn’t made “The Leap” yet, as Bill Simmons might say.

Reigns has been the unquestioned top star in the company for several years, in ways that go beyond his lengthy Universal title run. He’s also not your stereotypical top heel, as he has plenty of fans (even young ones) who would be thrilled if he somehow manages to pin Rhodes for the second straight year.

On top of that, while WrestleMania 40 is taking place in Philadelphia, it won’t be a strictly Philly crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. People journey to the WrestleMania host city from all over the world, so that element is also different than that infamous Royal Rumble.

Will lots of fans be heartbroken if Rhodes loses again? Yes. Will some still cheer Reigns, and will pretty much all of them tune in for Raw to see what’s next? Also yes.

Fans aren’t just going to abandon Cody Rhodes

Rhodes is one of the savviest performers in the business today, one who simply understands the craft at the highest level whether it’s inside the ring or representing WWE in the media. So when he was making the rounds this week suggesting that he has to win this time or fans won’t have his back, it’s some 3D chess-type stuff.

On “The MMA Hour” this week, Rhodes suggested that he’d be a “joke” if he didn’t beat Reigns this time.

On the surface, that seems like Cody saying there’s no way people would continue to support him if he comes up short again. And maybe a few will jump ship, as that’s always a risk.

This is wrestling, however, which means there can always be extenuating circumstances to help save face. It’s possible they might even be the same ones for the second straight year, since it’s possible and maybe even probable that Rhodes and Seth Rollins lose the tag team match on night 1, making Rhodes-Reigns a Bloodline Rules affair on night 2.

Cody’s supporters will be angry if he loses again, no doubt. They might even channel some of their dismay toward WWE, just not enough to stop them from watching.

They might not even be outraged that Reigns is still the champ, which is the ideal situation if that’s the direction WWE is headed. In a best case scenario, Reigns continues his run, giving more legs to The Bloodline saga. People are clamoring for a Rhodes-Rock match, and The Rock is actually free to do it sometime over the next year. And business continues to boom in the meantime.

Maybe that’s not where all this will end up. Maybe Rhodes will have his hand raised and we’ll get to retire “finish the story” so it can go out to pasture or to stud or wherever phrases go when they’ve run their course.

It’s just much easier to see WWE giving Reigns a victory since it’s dealing from a position of strength that it so rarely has enjoyed, even as the top wrestling promotion in the world for decades. I promise not to be as shocked this time.

WWE sent 2 rings, 3 wrestlers for The Rock to train for WrestleMania 40

It was a team effort to help The Rock prepare for his in-ring return at WrestleMania 40.

There are very few human beings as dedicated to staying in ridiculous shape as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Father Time may be undefeated, but The Rock is at least taking him to Game 7.

Yet even for the Final Boss, there’s a difference between looking like a Greek god and being in ring shape, the kind of specific fitness needed to pull off a top level WWE wrestling match of any length. You can’t quite get that working solo, especially when you’re a super busy entertainment star and businessman.

So WWE went to great lengths to give Johnson the help he’d need to get in ring shape for his upcoming tag team match on night 1 of WrestleMania 40. ESPN broke down those measures in a lengthy feature on The Rock’s impending in-ring return:

  • WWE sent one wrestling ring to Los Angeles and another to Hawaii for The Rock to use for training
  • Gallus, the NXT team of Mark Coffey, Joe Coffey and Wolfgang, helped him work on tag team matches in L.A., while he used the Hawaii ring for solo workouts
  • Referee Chad Patton, Michael Hayes and Bobby Roode also helped with the L.A. sessions, and a WWE medical team was present as well

As The Rock told ESPN, some parts of pro wrestling are “like riding a bike,’ but timing and getting reacclimated to different kinds of physical impacts are harder to prepare for by yourself.

“Fortunately for me, very lucky in that I became somewhat of a ring general where I see the circumference of the ring and where I need to be usually timing wise,” Johnson said. “Because timing is really important in our business of wrestling. So, just putting in the work, training, the diet begins, which always sucks. And taking the falls and just getting my ass kicked every day. So, we’ll see how it goes.”

The incredible team effort to help Johnson prepare suggests he’ll be able to perform at the level WWE fans associate with his Hall of Fame career. We’ll find out soon as he climbs into the ring at Lincoln Financial Field this Saturday, April 6.

Roman Reigns tells Jimmy Fallon how far he’s come: ‘The lightest show I’ve ever done was 2 people’

Suffice it to say that the crowd at WrestleMania 40 will be thousands of times larger for Roman Reigns and The Rock.

When Roman Reigns and The Rock head to the ring on night 1 of WrestleMania 40 to take on Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins, they’ll do so in front of tens of thousands of screaming fans. As they recalled while appearing together on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” however, it definitely wasn’t always that way.

The Tribal Chief and the Final Boss dropped in on Fallon to promote the upcoming Show of Shows at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, but the host started their chat by asking about the past. There was extensive discussion about the overall Samoan family in pro wrestling, and how the two men are intertwined not only with each other but many other past and present WWE stars as well.

Fallon was also interested in knowing what it was like when they were just breaking into the business, and Reigns said at that time you could have seen him wrestling almost literally anywhere.

“I mean it could have been anywhere,” Reigns said. “We could have done it in a parking lot, we could have in a used cars parking lot, it could have been a fairground, an armory.”

Fallon followed up by asking about the “crowds” in those days, to which Reigns explained that was using the term about as loosely as possible.

“The lightest show I’ve ever done was two people,” he said. “Just two, yeah. It got so bad that I was like asking for requests. ‘What do you wanna see?’ So it’s been bad, but we’re in a really, really good place right now.”

That’s a massive understatement, as WWE is on a hot streak the likes of which it hasn’t experienced for years, consistently selling out shows. Check out what The Rock had to say to Fallon about breaking records together with Reigns and going from making “40 bucks a match” to where they are today.
